London, 18 October 2016, with cross-party support, Members of the UK Parliament inaugurated a new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Somaliland. Somaliland Foreign Minister Dr. Saad Ali Shire was in attendance at the inaugural meeting and set out the main arguments for Somaliland recognition. He noted Somaliland’s existence as a historical fact, that it clearly fulfills all the criteria for statehood set out in the Montevideo Convention and that recognition would not open a ‘pandora’s box’ for other African secession claims as some have suggested, but would rather boost efforts to bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Horn of Africa region. APPG members MPs Stephen Doughty, Clive Betts and Stephen Timms expressed thanks to the Foreign Minister for his remarks and asked him a series of questions about the current state of Somaliland politics. The MPs used the occasion to declare their commitment to support Somaliland’s engagement with the UK Government.

The creation of the new All Party Parliamentary Group is an important milestone in Somaliland’s engagement with the UK Parliament, as it replaces the previous APPG on Somaliland and Somalia with a new body dedicated solely to Somaliland. The APPG aims to highlight Somaliland’s achievements in building a peaceful and democratic state, and to draw attention to its important role in combating terrorism and piracy. It also hopes to build support for the UK’s continued assistance towards Somaliland’s development.

The new APPG is comprised of a coalition of MPs from a wide range of parties and backgrounds whose collective efforts will help in championing the cause of Somaliland. Somaliland hopes the new form will allow its representatives to brief MPS on issues of importance to Somaliland and help improve UK-Somaliland relations.

Speaking following the inauguration of the group, Somaliland Representative to the UK, Ambassador Ali Aden Awale said: “I am proud to see the inauguration of the APPG which has come about with the active help of friends of Somaliland in the UK Parliament, after two years of hard work. Ensuring that this new body is dedicated solely to Somaliland is important for our country’s relationship with the United Kingdom. It will allow us to better work with the many MPs who are supportive of Somaliland’s recognition, and enable the UK Parliament to have a more focused engagement with Somaliland, in line with our aspirations to be recognised as a sovereign state.”
